Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol addiction is a serious problem that often develops gradually. It’s little wonder that alcoholics have a hard time recognizing their addiction, though it may be painfully obvious to others. Alcohol is a socially acceptable substance in many circles, so it’s even easy for outsiders to overlook the addiction for some time.

But gradually, one drink turns into another and another. The occasional social activity turns into a habit. A person may start drinking alone or even drinking before social outings to “warm up” and get comfortable. A person may start drinking at parties earlier than everyone else or be among the last ones to stop. The occasional drink escalates into alcohol abuse, meaning the drinking happens a little too often and carries on a little too long. The alcohol abuse may begin to make others uncomfortable.

When a person spirals into full-blown alcohol addiction, it quickly becomes painfully obvious to everyone. They will often become withdrawn, depressed, and their job and relationships will likely be put to the test. They may drive while intoxicated, often simply because there are very few times when the person is not under the influence of alcohol. They may lose their license, go to jail, pay heavy fines, and that may not even stop them.

Alcohol addiction is a dark place to be. The alcoholic is often overwhelmed by sadness, hopelessness and despair, though they may continue to act like everything is fine and they are happy. In fact they will not be happy, however. They will be unhappy with the level of alcohol they are consuming and the repercussions it has on their lives. Unfortunately, alcohol is the only thing that keeps them sociable and pleasant, and it distracts them from any difficulties they are facing in life. Without it, they can no longer keep up appearances, so it’s a vicious cycle with the addiction exacerbating the symptoms and vice versa.
