There are a variety of approaches to alcohol treatment and drug rehab. Probably the least effective is self-treatment. Studies have shown that a stay in alcohol rehab treatment lasting 30 or more days is most effective, with the least chance of relapse. When you are ready to set your alcohol addiction aside, don’t be afraid or ashamed to look into all alcohol, treatment options.
Outpatient Alcohol Treatment
This is an effective option for those who cannot set aside work or family obligations. They may be too busy to spend days and nights away from home. Another factor is that outpatient alcohol treatment options are often the least expensive. However, any recovering alcoholic in this treatment program will need a stable, supportive home environment to return to each evening. They will also need to understand that around-the-clock access to medical care will not be available, which can be a problem if there are co-occurring physical or psychological disorders.
Inpatient Alcohol Treatment
For people who are able to set aside work and family obligations, inpatient alcohol treatments can provide a good solution. This is also an effective option for those who have found outpatient alcohol treatment inadequate in the past, or for those with co-occurring physical or psychological afflictions requiring intensive treatment.
Long-Term Residential Alcohol Treatment
This is geared toward the most severe alcohol addictions, and usually requires a stay of six months or more. It offers much the same setup as an inpatient alcohol treatment plan, and is typically in a rural, mountainous or beach side setting, where the recovering alcoholic can find peace to focus on their recovery.
There are other differences in alcohol rehabilitation treatment options. Geographical location is one important difference. Recovering alcoholics often choose a program located some distance from their home, so they are removed from the daily temptations and stresses that contributed to their addiction. Other differences include treatment approach, addiction philosophy, and program affiliation and cost. All these differences should be researched carefully before making a decision.
