Methamphetamine commonly know as meth, ice, or crystal meth, is a a psychoactive drug. It increases alertness, concentration, energy and in high doses can induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem, and increase libido. By activating the psychological reward system via triggering a cascading release of dopamine to the brain, methamphetamine is very addictive.
Methamphetamine is used for the treatment of ADHD and exogenous obesity which is dispensed in the USA under the trademark name desoxyn. The physical effects can include headache, dry mouth,anorexia flushing, restlessness, hypertension, diarrhea, dizziness, constipation, blurred vision, and numbness, and with high doses can cause convulsions, heart attack, stroke and death.
There are also psychological effects with crystal meth which include anxiety, alertness, energy, euphoria, self-confidence, irritability, agitation, aggression, and hallucinations. Withdrawal symptoms of methamphetamine consist of of an increased appetite, depression, and fatigue. Symptoms can last for days but with chronic use symptoms can last for weeks or even months, due to the severity and length of time and the amount of methamphetamine used. Also withdrawal symptoms may include agitation, anxiety, excessive sleeping, and suicidal thoughts. Long term use of methamphetamine can cause serious heart disease as well as depression and suicide.
Methamphetamine is neurotoxic and is associated with an increased risk of Parkinson disease. Methamphetamine abuse is believed to be responsible for causing persisting cognitive deficits, such as memory loss. After stopping methamphetamine, over 20 percent of people addicted develop a long-lasting psychosis that resembles schizophrenia. The tolerance to methamphetamine is not completely understood, however the extent of tolerance and the rate at which it develops vary widely between individuals. Methamphetamine, or crystal meth, is highly addictive, withdrawal symptoms are common with heavy use and relapse is very common.
